An important announcement concerning summer 2023

To the R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Family,

We are sharing some difficult news concerning 2023 summer programming. Unfortunately due to two weather-related events, we are unable to begin this summer at our home camp in Lloyd Meadows. Please read on to learn more about the issues, and most importantly, what we are doing to ensure we serve our program participants this summer.

In the middle of March, Maverick discovered significant mudslides along US Forest Rte 22S82 that threatened to shut down, for multiple years, our only point of ingress and egress. Thanks to Maverick’s early discovery and the support of the United States Forest Service, we were holding on to hope that Pyles Camp could be opened in time for our session 1 campers. A lot of hard work has occurred in the last month to attempt to open the road, with plenty more work to do.

On Wednesday, April 19th, Maverick was able to partially open the road and drive into Pyles Camp. That is when our heart sank. Our beloved Mess Hall collapsed due to excessive snow loads.

With the uncertainty surrounding a safe reopening of the road, and significant construction required at Pyles Camp, we’ve made the difficult decision to relocate our Session 1 and Session 2 programming to another facility. We are so excited that we are still able to serve our campers and Lioneers in 2023 by pivoting to a host facility at Camp Sky Meadows in Angeles Oaks, CA, near Big Bear.

Campers and Lioneers who have applied for sessions 3, 4, and 5 will be contacted and offered a place in Session 1 or 2.

The second half of our summer programming still remains up in the air, and we plan on making further announcements in the appropriate time.

We want to thank Maverick, the USFS, and the Pyles community for coming together to make the road safe for the public and for beginning the hard work of rebuilding our beloved Mess Hall.

We look forward to spending this summer rebuilding our facility and our programming, all while continuing Mr. Pyles dream of supporting…

“…the poor and needy, the underprivileged children, whose bodies are undernourished, whose thoughts are clouded by fear, whose hearts are heavy from lack of love and understanding—- to find and rebuild them into healthier and happier generations of Americans, firmly endowed with the ideals and principles of our freedom loving country.”

Sincerely,

The R.M. Pyles Boys Camp Staff
